My Travel Wishlist

I don’t know about you, but I spend a mildly alarming amount of time planning holidays I can’t afford to go on. Well, everybody needs a hobby, I suppose?

With that in mind, here are my current daydream destinations (in no particular order):

I’m not going to say that this wasn’t influenced by my new-found love of Mexican food (tacos, where have you been all my life?) because that would be a lie. I will say that it’s not the only reason I want to go, obviously. Apart from the food and the sunshine, it’s just gorgeous.

I very nearly went here during my trip to Italy last year - I so wanted to go, but I simply didn’t have the time as I was only there for a week and had to figure out how to squeeze Venice, Florence, and Milan into those seven days (with great difficulty, but damn did I enjoy the attempt). Someday I’ll go back to Northern Italy and be able to dedicate a few days to wandering between the towns.

Last year, for a job I was working in, I did some research into Iran and holidays there, and ever since then I have had my eye on this tour. Iran looks like such an amazing place, I’d love to check it out some day.

Similarly to Iran, this was not somewhere I’d considered until I found a tour for it online. Just look at Petra - who wouldn’t kill to see it IRL?

So a few weeks ago I watched the BBC documentary Galapagos, which was both  visually stunning and incredibly interesting. I’ve always sort of wanted to visit the Galapagos islands, but the doc just made all those latent hopes and dreams resurface, leading to me spending a rather depressing evening pricing flights to Quito. (Spoiler alert: it’s both complicated and expensive).

New York is one of the places I can’t quite believe I’ve never been to. In fact, the only time I’ve ever been to the US was a family holiday to Florida when I was a teenager. New York has been calling my name for years, and now that Norwegian Air has started some decently-priced flights between there and Belfast, I might actually get to visit at some point in the foreseeable future!

South-East Asia
“But Áine,” I hear you cry, “SEA isn’t a single place! You’re cheating!”

Yes, yes I am. But my logic is, if I were spending the time and money on flights to the other side of the world, I’d be damn sure to be there a while and pack in as many countries as I could along the way. Cambodia, Laos, some Thai islands, maybe even Bali… I’m depressing myself at the thought, because that trip is not in my near future!

So until recently, I never had any real interest in visiting Portugal. It just never really registered with me as a potential holiday destination and I never looked into it. And then my parents decided that we’re going on a family cruise this year to… Spain and Portugal. I looked up some of the places we’re stopping in, and they look great - and then I looked up some places we’re not stopping in, and discovered Lagos. So at some point soon, I’m going to have to go back to Portugal.

Malta is a very recent addition to this list, mostly brought on by the fact that I’ve noticed some travel agents posting deals there lately. Then I discovered Ryanair are beginning flights there from Belfast this winter, and my interest was definitely piqued. I’d also like to go for a sentimental reason - Malta was were my parents went on their honeymoon nearly thirty years ago, but I’ve never been, so I’d love to check it out.

Yes, this is another not-a-specific-place, but it’s also my blog, and I make the rules. I’d love to see Cuba, Jamaica, Barbados… and I want to go on this cruise. Who wants to share a cabin?

So ends my top ten places I’d like to visit (for the moment, anyway, until I discover another destination). Has anybody been to any of these places? What did you think? And what’s on your travel list?

    1. I feel that way about going on holidays too - wish I could afford more. If you wouldn't mind sending me some of those money tree seeds, I'd really appreciate it 😉
